WITH MARIETTA

Fridays at noon at Midwest Shorin Ryu Health & Wellness Center (MSR), Marietta teaches Yoga for Strength & Longevity. After this class today—my first class of this kind focusing on alignment and strength—I feel great.

I wasn’t prepared to feel this good. It’s Friday, and I’ve taught five classes this week, done my own training, and attended two yoga classes before this one. I was sore, tired, and simply worn out when I entered the studio for class. I was prepared to feel completely wiped out by the time I finished.

I wasn’t prepared to feel relaxed yet tingling with a focused kind of energy.

This class, which I took with one of Marietta’s students who has been with her for more than a dozen years, made me laugh out loud when I tried to perform a stance that will take a bit for me to get to, it made me sweat, it stretched my body and my spirit in a way that simply made me feel good. And when it was over, I found myself smiling.

For someone who teaches the art of self-defense, which by its nature requires a bit of aggression, I balanced that with a wash of peace. In my life, I need both. I am more complete after this yoga practice. And that is a reason to smile.

I wish I could give you all this feeling.

Check out Yoga for Strength & Longevity with Marietta on Fridays at noon. I believe you’ll be glad you did.
